My absence from writing has been largely due to relocating three times, working at three different jobs, and finding an operational replacement car. Additionally, I was able to respond to the contributors on the latest trip via talks, emails, and letters. ...The spring of 2011 had brought about some necessary but difficult transitions.

Updates about the school typically come from the GCS Director, Nana. We have been able to keep up to date through emails and a few periodic phone calls. The school is in good condition still, and the latest volunteer (Peter Moller, Denmark) contributed toilets to the building in addition to finishing the small office in the back. Hearing about this just before summer began, reassured me that we still are able to continue the good Samaritan flow, while the school continues to progress. There haven't been as many volunteers as last year (through the partner ngo -GCS), but sufficient attention has remained thanks to other contributors such as Crosscause and DIVOG.

Aside from the volunteer programs, GCS has been furthering their internal efforts on a water production business. The purpose of the business is to bring about more income into the ngo, but also to supplement the volunteer staff that have made several sacrifices. Below you will see the water production efforts summed in a one minute clip...

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v22.nonxt8.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D59e69495278c3736%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1329886575%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3DFC40BEF1AEB290701B34AA99D6702885AED793B.404907A8961AC70A6A252CF5DBD7682CEDBD4EBC%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D59e69495278c3736%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DFWv2cmcSj8u584G9aGwat6o0GlA&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Lastly, many people have asked me when I plan to return to Ghana. As of today they have paved three floors, three chalkboards, and finally finished with the plastering/dressing around the frames. Additionally, I set them out on repairs to the first structure, first on the face wall, and secondly an interior support wall. While these masons have been diligently working (minus one laborer, who came in drunk after lunch), the team of carpenters have been planing and shaping more wood for desks. In the midst of their work I have been able to run around the city as usual, making purchases and transporting the goods back to the site.

I started to write this article yesterday. However, the day before was a complete disappointment, and so I needed to reset, review, and then deliver...

After discussing plans to accommodate the team of volunteers in the last week, the man whom we had already met and discussed the offer with, decided to discuss a price the same day the volunteers were coming in (Sunday). This came as a bit of a shock as the paramount chief had been the man we went through in order to secure the offer a week before anything took place. As I rushed into the village I met with Godwin and another rep from the other NGO to meet with the head of the household. After an awkward discussion of his past-disgust with a separate episode involving volunteers back in July, he declared he would not budge on the price of 500 Ghana Cedis (almost 400 USD). All the planning and organizing that had happened, quickly resulted in chaos. Leaving the household highly aggravated, we decided to frantically inquire for another option. And after a couple of let downs we eventually had to give into a cost for a low budget motel. This became the decision as it was best not to make the problems aware to the team of volunteers, or else we might inhibit their efforts of goodwill. After the day ended, I was able to sleep and regroup for next mornings work.

There is a cost that attaches to volunteering. The self sacrifice is not measurable. It is not something someone can understand from reading; it is only understood through experience. It is equally true in understanding the life of many Africans. In the case of the foreign volunteer however, each scenario of self sacrifice presents different challenges. The foreign volunteer cannot exist without a stage of tribulations. This critical stage captures the ambition momentarily and forces a decision of the volunteer. The choice they have is to diligently push through, or simply quit. Although they may be perceived as mindless, or there actions 'a waste of time', the hardships push the volunteer to act in despair or to endure. It can create bitterness, disdain, or even resentment within an individual, in helping the needy. Either way the work of a volunteer is more than a monetary, or timely sacrifice.

After only a short time of working in any third world country, I would assume most volunteers ponder 'why such developmental problems exist' ...Or 'what can be done to fix them'. In all honesty there is no immediate solution to these questions, and often times it feels discouraging when finding out how deep the problems go, and how entangled they have become. In relation to this project and my experience, I focus on a book (about the genocide in Rwanda) that I had read while here. One particular passage seems to coincide with the concepts mentioned above.

"I often found it helpful to think of central Africa in the mid-1990's as comparable to late medieval Europe-plagued by serial wars of tribe and religion, corrupt despots, predatory elites and a superstitious peasantry, festering with disease, stagnating in poverty, and laden with promise. Of course, a key process that happened had helped European peoples pull toward greater prosperity and saner governance was colonialism, which allowed for the exporting of their aggression and the importing of wealth. Ex-colonies don't enjoy such opportunities as they tumble into the family of modern nation-states; whatever forms of government they come up with, in their struggles to build sustaining political traditions, are likely to be transitional."

Generally speaking, Africa has a trade deficit; it imports more than it exports. Ghana has that same problem. This has remained the problem since the time in which Africa became exploited long ago. Fortunately there are some reports of progress and more self-reliance around the continent. At least a lot of 'progress' in that there is less civil conflict. My thoughts about this and the concept of 'sacrifice' have often led to discussions with some of the locals. I also see why they are constantly asking to come to the U.S. as they know of a land of opportunity, little conflict, and economic prosperity. Ironically, when I ask what they would do when they get to the U.S. most of them reply "I don't know ... maybe relax."

To close the article I want to point out that without good Samaritans more hardships would exist for these people. It is because of several benevolent people (mostly of the middle class) that the third world is able to gain a small amount each year to ease their sufferings. I know that if the kids and the community of Agitome (Kpetoe/Wodome area) were able to go to the U.S. some would eventually visit their supporters, and say a big thank-you for helping them. Personally, I know that some will have great achievements and succeed in the future.

May jay do (I'm sick)

Since my last post I unknowingly prolonged an illness for five days. After traveling a short distance from the city of Ho it became quite obvious that the hospital would be where I needed to go. So I spent a couple days learning about the health care system. I was dehydrated and not enjoying food so it took me about a week to regain my energy.

During the week I learned many things; that none of the masons showed up for work in the village, and that they wouldn't be working until they saw me again. For some reason they have started to believe that if they don't see me for a few days they won't come to work (there is a different level of trust between local Ghanaians). Aggravated and still crippled by my illness I decided to read and rest. While resting my mind wondered. Thoughts bounced around my mind; why is Africa plagued with problems? What could I be doing if I wasn't sick? From Thanksgiving and what it would be like, to how expensive health care is in U.S. my ideas soared -One major difference about the health care system I realized is that two days in hospital with drugs, multiple doctor check-ups, and nurse attention only costs around 80 US dollars -and that's without insurance coverage. Just before I left for my trip to come to Ghana I had a minor eye procedure that cost more than 300 USD.

Recently, I was drawn to a passage written by a journalist about the genocide in Rwanda and how little America hears about the specific issues in Africa. Upon recovery I began to talk to more people about what their thoughts were on the matter. Even today I was able to speak with a police friend shipping out to Sudan for a UN peacekeeping mission. Many seem to know a lot about what goes on in the U.S. but I explained that many of us don't educate ourselves enough on the matters abroad, or the media narrows the coverage not including much of Africa.

The upcoming week requires great organization as the team from Canada will be arriving. Tomorrow and Friday will be busy days and I'm thankful to be in much better health. The agenda includes meeting with another NGO for planning, bringing a carpenter to teach, hauling in paint, boards (for desks), and supplies for the completion of three rooms and the entire outside of the structure. My hope is to complete this and make a good start on the toilets -already several blocks have been molded. Once again my time and resources are limited but I know that something great will come from all of this work. Everyone's support in itself has been something great.

Fica enye e chi le fe? (Where is the bathroom?)

I purchased 35 boards for doors and windows about six days ago. As the boards came in they were worked on by an honest carpenter that I met through Kieran. He said that he was able to assist in all future projects without having to hassle over a price each time a task would be assigned. The week following the parent teacher meeting I have noticed more parents giving towards fuel for the van, which was a fuss beforehand and may continue to be one in the future. Despite that, I know that an understanding was made at the PTA, and I look forward to the next meeting in December.

The meeting with the other volunteer organization went well as free labor has been promised in exchange for accommodations to house at least seven Canadians. We will be setting up a painting and desk building project while they stay near the school.

More discussion in regards to future plans occurred, such as when and where the toilet placement would be on site as well as repairs to the existing structure. As far as labor was concerned several days were wasted by laborers claiming to come and finish but then not showing up.

Yesterday could have been the most difficult day so far. The start of the day was slow but had me skipping lunch to stain frames in the school structure. While staining, a student frantically shouted my direction in ewe about some kind of scuffle near the road. As I approached people gathered and explained that one of the students had thrown a rock at a passing vehicle, which struck a girl in the head. After using very basic first aid, and being disgusted, I traveled back to Ho for a meeting. However, before the meeting began I got pretty sick. Just before going to the meeting, police decided to raid the home my friend and I went to, falsely accusing us of a drug deal. They insisted on a search and then attempted to take us away. We almost were taken to jail but my friend (Kakra) knew two of the officers who instructed the other officers to leave us be. Thursday (today) could not have come any sooner...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2fKR4bIu6AE/TOWBmbatYoI/AAAAAAAAAHI/krLHnLhlK08/s320/SDC10722.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5540977413744059010" /> Ending on a positive note, the carpentry is coming along great, thanks to Deon and his team.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://godwinamway.blogspot.com/2010/11/fica-enye-e-chi-le-fe-where-is-bathroom.html' title='Fica enye e chi le fe? After learning plenty about water sanitation and production, I moved to Kpetoe and readjusting. I noticed it took me about five days to get acclimated to the food, climate, people, transportation, and of course, the toilet. Last week, I traveled to Wodome, which is a very small village nearest to Godwin Amway School. While there, discussions of what to do next ensued, and the plastering took place almost immediately thereafter. Currently, we are working on the frames for the doors and windows. All the frames, doors, and windows will be set in place by the end of next week.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2fKR4bIu6AE/TOWAEu4zpsI/AAAAAAAAAHA/2GALJhpX_4E/s320/SDC10716.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5540975735343392450" />

Good news came early last week as I was able to meet with several familiar faces. DIVOG (another volunteer organization based in Ghana) will be assisting in the completion of possibly two projects; painting the outside, and building desks. This was certainly a great thing to know, as more volunteers can give their support to this very cause. Organizing such a project takes quite a bit of effort, so I am already attempting to set things up -purchasing, cutting, and transporting wood. I was also able to meet with a rep form CrossCause (Kieran), who has been very helpful to me, and a great contributor to Godwin Amway School.

As usual that day was followed by another day of frustrations. Discussing the project with one of the carpenters didn't exactly coincide with my hopes, and has slowed the project. Even another frustration is that we must wait for the dry season to be in full swing before digging for the start of toilets. Again it seems as though time is not working for me, but I'm certain that these important tasks will come to fruition in due time.

Monday I traveled to Accra to bring another volunteer (Tianna) to the village of Wodome to volunteer teach in the school. And as usual the transportation system in Ghana isn't reliable, as I arrived much later than anticipated to the airport. Ironically, they don't give out tickets to everyone that purchases them, but then later in the midst of your trek they decide to check for everyone's tickets...

To finish, today was another important day for the school. When I first arrived I requested a parent teacher meeting (PTA) to take place relatively soon. Today, Thursday, the PTA was able to start somewhere between 9 and 1030AM. Little by little the parents were able to gather in the room. Unfortunately, not all could make it to the meeting but roughly 36 were able to attend. The agenda consisted of being introduced to the parents, explaining what I was there to do, and then describing that I do not have all the money to support everything (as is the case with the other foreigner investors), so I introduced the idea of small school fees, which would be a great accomplishment in relieving some of the financial hardships.

Ichee lay-jaja (It is raining)

I have arrived during the wet season. My arrival happened without any problems or delays. In fact it went so smoothly that I was able to start at the site immediately, and witness fast progress. Being in Ghana for nearly one week and seeing progress is amazing -at least that's all I had hoped in my arrival... Each airport I was at had at least a one hour delay, followed by a two hour wait in Accra, and finishing with a congested road to Ho (the city near Kpetoe) which lasted lasted four hours. Exhausted and tried, I greeted several familiars when I made it in. Perhaps it wasn't the best greeting, but it was positive nonetheless. During the next few days I slept and then hauled bags of water at the volunteer organization (GCS). The organization is trying to be more self sufficient by launching this water project, while continuing to maintain the lowest fees to volunteers.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_2fKR4bIu6AE/TOV-H2xgG3I/AAAAAAAAAG4/7WEBlTOIjY0/s320/SDC10704.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5540973589976587122" />

The first day working with the new water project we taxied 30 bags of water (15 liters each) down the roadways repeatedly. In the midst of delivering water we got a flat tire, which wasn't a real big deal. But it happened again the next day during more deliveries -an abrupt reintroduction to their lifestyle. I also learned the few things there is to learn about the water project. There are three main components: distribution, storage, and production. Production has two branches which require more thought; purification and packaging. A machine drops an enclosure of 500 ml water about every three seconds. 30 of these are then manually, and uniformly packed into a larger bag. The large bag is stacked and eventually distributed. I have read that clean water is becoming more scarce and it's true. In a way one can see that in the high demand for water here, even in such a new project as this one.

I am really hoping to readjust soon. Work at the school started today and I will be 'picking' another volunteer from the capitol later this week. I have noticed that some things have not changed over the last year... time is still a casual concept in Ghana, the kids in the orphanage still go to the school, work hard, and always look forward to visitors. Delile is still a considerate caretaker at the orphanage. The kids at the school continue to stare and chant "yavoo" (white). Two teachers remain from nearly two years ago; Israel and Madam Francisca. To contrast all these similarities are a few noticeable differences, both negative and positive. One of the regular visitors to the orphanage had been murdered months ago, a girl (Innocent is her name) at the orphanage had a baby boy, and everything at the school has progressed!

It is great to know that the community has taken to the school. There is much more work to be done in the upcoming months, but it feels great to be a part of another growing and beneficial institution in this community. "the school looks beautiful" -many have said.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2fKR4bIu6AE/TOV8eCaZjhI/AAAAAAAAAGw/oG5pBz44XlE/s320/DSCN0669.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5540971772034780690" />

My return

With another busy summer coming to end I was able to speak at a couple more places. The Kiwanis club of the Dells, and the Lions of New Lisbon were a couple of the groups that gave me opportunity and support. Additionally, there was a fundraiser that brought in a large amount of donations. Thank you ladies of Curves, Thrivent Lutheran, and everyone else for your efforts and support!

Since the start of September, things have slowed down enough to allow me to refocus and get more organized for my trip. I purchased the plane ticket for October 26th, returning just before Christmas. The goal I set out for is within reach but not quite there. I am a few hundred dollars short but as I learned in the previous trip I will have to be patient and see what happens.

I will be writing one more time before I leave, and plan to keep more updates on a weekly basis while I'm there. I don't know what surprises will meet me this time, but I know I have more experience going forward.

Delayed update

Work has definately come full swing yet again in the summer, making it more difficult to update. I had previously hoped to return to Ghana in June for completing most of the project I originally set out for, however I have received much less support in the late spring.

I needed to move again from Eau Claire and have been searching for more places to speak at in order to raise funds. I am planning on; a fundraiser in July (Adams area), speaking at a couple places in July and August (Dells/Mauston areas), and having a raffle. When I am able to have more time away from work, and the time approaches for these events, I will release more details.

A few weeks ago I received several messages from Godwin in regards to a broken alternator, blown tires, and unpaid teachers... He received some funding last week, from our raised money, to help keep the project afloat.

Sidenote- Godwin's birthday was a bit over a week ago. Additionally, the team from Ireland should currently be in the area yet agian to continue assisting this project (late June-early July). Finally, Ghana in fact won against the mens U.S. soccer team.

In the meantime there are still young students on the other side of the earth attempting to learn. There are still disorganized days of school due to a lack in supplies. Ultimatetly this means there are still things that must be done to alleviate these needs, so please continue to help! Currently we are just above 2,000 dollars with a goal of around 5,000 dollars.

Recent pictures

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_2fKR4bIu6AE/S5pqCZQxjPI/AAAAAAAAAEo/wGVs0J5q5aA/s320/Jake+School+002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447783288631561458" />
Lately I have been busy, working (fortunately). The money spent on the 3 room block for the school totaled 6,000 dollars. Since the use of the money raised, we have been able to raise another 1,200 dollars. After the first trip I have spent 200 USD twice on salaries for the teachers -so they would continue working (the money wasn't used all at one time of course), and health care for Godwin when he was ill. Additionally I have spent about 100 USD on an alternator for the van (that was taken form the 6,000 USD). Below is a list of what the expenditure breakdown was for the first trip I went on.

Some purchases (where some of your money went)

Before trip
Plane ticket -$1,300
Program fee to the Volunteer Organization -$300
Passport/VISA expenses -$300
Vaccinations -$300
Miscellaneous (medicine, clothes etc.) -$200
Approximate cost to go -$2,400

During trip/for the orphanage
1 Fan -$20
1 Stove/grill with 3 burners -$17.40
Gas Cylinder -$33.57
3 yards of hose/regulator -$10
15 kg Bag of rice (last day celebration) -$17.86
Additional (food for orphanage) -$13.57
6 Pair of (good/used) Shoes -$11.07
Kids Movies -$1.79

This can give you an idea as to what the cost was to me, the first time around. However, it became quite different with the construction of the school block on the second trip, even though some of the expenses were similar from the first trip (ie plane ticket). Other items on the first trip were no longer expenses on the second trip, ie program fee.

Given this situation, it has become apparent that more money is needed -to fund this project, as it is not yet finished. My intended goal is to have the school finished (constructed blocks that house students in a decent learning environment) and to have adequate tools for the students to enhance their learning experience (mainly books). This means I am hoping to finish the structure, giving it a toilet as well. The last thing I would like to do is to place three of the students out of this school into a public school that is more equipped to harness their potential. I know we can do this again and finish the project that was started. I am currently looking for more places to speak at and write to. Please don't forget about Ghana and our investment in these kids, continue giving in whatever way you are able, even if you only have suggestions -I am all ears.

If you have not received a letter from my return yet, I do apologize and have not forgotten the help you have provided. I will try and continue sending them as I get more organized.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 230px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_2fKR4bIu6AE/S2M83NP-1AI/AAAAAAAAAEg/DnSPSNzz50U/s320/img071.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432252494686114818" />

Thank you for the support

An overdue update

I know that it has been a while since I posted anything, but the holidays bogged down my process of updates. Currently, I am finishing mailing out letters to most of the supporters about the state of the project.

Rewinding back to the final week I was in Ghana...
My last week was a whirlwind of events. Trying to finish things in time but doing so the correct way meant I needed to run around lot more. I visited an orphanage in Tsito (a village 15 minutes away form the city of Ho). While I was there I met some of the people that run it. I participated in a meeting that was set up for prospective volunteers. This meant it was an additional site under the volunteer organization (GCS). I was able to visit the village "Gorkpo", where I was kindly received. Similarly to the orphanage of Tsito this village may be a future site for volunteers. Conversely though, it has never received any volunteers. Because of this, and the obvious fact that I was a foreigner, they expressed many needs. One of those most basic problems they face is that they must walk nearly five miles during the dry season for water. Even though I visited them and told them I would remember them when I returned to the U.S., I told them I could not promise them to meet any of their needs. I later found out that no other foreigners had ever visited the traditional village of about 200. I also learned that evidence of the developed world contrasts their world as it has been able to make its way in, via clothes, music, or other products.

I continued on the project daily by going with Godwin to get/purchase bags of cement, 2x4, 2x6, iron sheets and other materials. At the end of each day I continued paying the laborers. A few days I was able to actually work building the structure and learning how they utilize their dominant building material of cement (termites). Each day I would document everything in a notebook I brought along, from the cost of supplies, to a daily wage of a water fetcher. I taught for a few days and brought some art supplies that became useful in a rare art class.

I was able to make some useful contacts while I was there in the second half of my stay. People had remembered me from my first trip and some of those ties were strengthened. On the other hand, I met new faces that were very involved in the Volta Region (i.e. Peace corp volunteer). Unfortunately, as I anticipated with a week remaining, progress was being made at a pace that was too slow. Because of this, I left without seeing the completion of the roof. I also had previously discovered that I didn't have enough money to complete the structure I was hoping to leave them. Ironically, before I left more money trickled into the account and I wasn't able to spend it. Again it wasn't easy to leave but the time had quickly approached and I was on my way scrambling to finish documenting, purchasing the last of the supplies, and budgeting for a final few days of supervised work, in my absence.

Upon returning to the airport in O'hare, I was greeted after grabbing my luggage. The encounter was a bit of a surprise to me, as a man approached me asking for help because his "sister was too embarrassed to ask". He claimed that they didn't have enough money to get a ride to the car. ...After spending time in a country of constant begging and having been asked only twice in the U.S. for money, it happened again.

Clearly everyone has a need. But it's important to understand where your money goes, what your money buys, how great the need is, and how effective the program is in reaching the expressed need. Poverty will probably never be eliminated but new opportunities can always be created.

Since I have been back I have remained in contact with my friends/fellow members of GCS. I have had the opportunity to speak again at a couple of the same churches and I have taken time sending letters out, about the experience, to most of the known supporters. Some things cannot be explained but more money has continued to come into the account again and I know I will be returning yet again. At the bottom of this page I posted a video clip that I assembled, which sums up some of the experience. The support from everyone has been incredible and I'm thankful that we can all be a part of a program that benefits the less fortunate. I will post pictures as I get enough time, but in the meantime please take a look at the video clip, and if possible, continue to support. The latest obstacle has been coming from a contractor that had been very ill with malaria which meant a different team of laborers had to come in for the the project. Because of this, the contract initially agreed upon has become void. This also meant that the others who had joined in this project had different ideas as to the formation of the school, which was another setback corrected almost immediately. The payments for work are now daily, and the supervision must be tightened even more. By the end of this week the rooms will be raised and that leaves the roof. Though many problems have made this all so difficult we have been able to trudge through the mud and make progress.

This week has also been interesting as I have returned to teaching 2 classes. The struggles of teaching young, illiterate (in English), disadvantaged, and ill equipped students has been difficult. However some students have demonstrated potential and interest in learning much more -as are their stomachs, their brains are also hungry. Some are in desperate need to have their intellect developed as they have been held back from advancing due to the constant instability in the school/untrained teachers/lack of textbooks.

Two students in particular have thrived through all of these circumstances and impressed me extremely. Given a fair chance in school, they could be what they wanted... but that fair chance may never come. One of the students told me they wanted to be a nurse when they grow up. The likelihood of this is very slim as she is coming from an orphanage, and poor school with very little stability. The positive aspect is she is quite possibly the smartest girl in the entire school. It is my hope that she will eventually get her chance as it is difficult for me to watch great potential wasted.

In light of all this I am reminded of our holiday in the U.S.

We are very fortunate. Opportunity has been abundant for all of us, and for that I am thankful.

Slow progress

Well I know I came with the understanding that things would not get accomplished as quickly as doing things in the U.S. but there have been many difficulties. To start; the contract agreement we made (the contractor, Godwin, GCS, and myself) was agreed upon in Ewe (local language). Therefore there were some misunderstandings in the whole process as to what the labor fee entailed. Because of this, the cost of a 3 room block for their use as a school is more expensive than the money I have raised. I already went into different markets to find out the cost of materials, but when the contractor spoke through Godwin about what was needed not everything came through in English. As a result I will be raising 2 rooms with the foundation of a third already complete.

To make matters worse, a few days ago both vehicles used for the transportation of kids to school (and transportation of the materials) broke down. The clutch on the blue vehicle went out Friday and on the white van (main vehicle donated by the Irish group) the alternator had gone out previously. Well the planets seem to line up perfectly on a daily basis for more things to complicate every simple thing you try to do because after returning more kids to their homes, the white van overheated while we were in Togo... All of this caused a delay in the work and transportation of supplies for the project. That night we met the mechanic that has been working on the troubled vehicle and again he tried to fix the alternator (which works now) and the fan belt. This costed me an additional 110 dollars, but had to be done. If that isnt bad enough Kpetoe (the village where all this happens) has had no fuel for about a month so we have had to run on fumes to get into the city (Ho) which is a half hour away.

-I bought out all the cement bags in the village so now I have to bring it all from Ho
-No more materials can be purchased in the village
-Abundance of potholes
-Communication is always a battle

Finally all the banks here are not taking more than 250 dollars in american express travelers checks each day due to some issue with conterfeiting. This means I am having to negotiate more with the workers so that they continue working and believe that I will pay them when I get the money. Fortunately some of the workers have taken interest in the school and either have or will have their kids go to school here, meaning it has become a collaborative effort.

Another thing I didnt realize when I came the first time was social services exist here. They arent governing everywhere but I was able to meet a lady that has recently been working with Godwin to help the kids and their foster families. We recently discovered that Mabel, one of the girls I met at the orphanage in the spring, had not been taken care of properly by her family. She was being deprived of a place to sleep and as a result slept outside in the town. She also was not given more clothes than the ones she had on the day we got her. Hopefully things will turn around and she will be able to come back to the orphanage as well as the school as I know that she would be better cared for there.

Hopefully progress will be made each day. One positive thing recently was that the secretary of the area for Education thanked me for what was going on. He remembered me from the spring and was glad that people living an ocean away cared enough to help their kids in the village.

But if I am to complete a 3 room school (for 90 kids) I will need additional funds. If you are able to give still, it would be extremely helpful. I really do appreciate all the support from everyone (letters, messages, money etc.).

From Ghana

I have been in Ghana for nearly one week. Many things have happened in this short amount of time. Fortunately the flight over went well and when I arrived in the morning we headed for Ho as soon as we could, since it was in the morning it was less expensive as well as easier to leave the capital quickly. The first couple of days were needed for adjusting, as the trip of appr. 13 hours was exhausting. After the following day I traveled to Kpetoe with Godwin, who was excited to see me again. Some things are still the same as I have had to relearn; the time it takes someone to come pick you up or take you somewhere is always much longer than back in the U.S., the food is always spicy (breakfast, lunch, or dinner), and the climate is very hot and fairly dry (Ghana is entering the dry season, which also means there are more mosquitoes than usual at the moment).

When I arrived to Kpetoe I was able to see the school. Interestingly enough the contribution of the 4 classrooms was great (by the team from Ireland), but there were a few smaller issues I was not aware of until now. When they came they rushed the building process in a matter of 10 days and chose to shape the entire spread of the school in an 'L' shape. However, it is more typical for schools in Ghana to have a line shape. Many Ghanaians have told me this including teachers of Kpetoe and Ho, as well as other citizens. In addition to this discovery I learned that they were unable to finish the structure's walls to meet the roof, and to divide the final room (which is one large room) in order to have 5 equally spaced rooms. Finally, the dimensions of the present structure does not reflect that of other schools in the area, which are deeper classrooms instead of wider ones -many other schools are uniform structures with the same setup in every room ie. the chalkboards are all on the southern walls, and the windows are all on the east or west walls etc.

Because of these issues the structure I have been trying to raise either needs to stick out like a sore thumb (done the way they would like it where all the rooms are the same) by not lining up flush, or match the current structure by lining up flush but having different arrangements in the classrooms with the windows and chalkboards etc. The decision from this dilemma seems to be going in favor of matching the current structure/continuing from it, since the masons and carpenters from the area believe it would work easier. As always in any situation involving a large investment, it is important to take the time and plan it all out. We have not built anything yet, but today the contract was signed/agreed upon, the cement bags were purchased, and the plan is starting to set in for much progress tomorrow.

GCS (Global Cultural Solution) which consists mainly of three Ghanaians, has been aiding me in my search for things and we have been able to gather prices of several items in order to purchase the lowest priced ones -This was the situation yesterday. The day before yesterday I was drawing up the estimate, which was discussed with by 4 other contractors and eventually their offers were given. I have also been able to help GCS as a member by offering opinions and giving some advice where needed.

As usual, several frustrations have slowed progress. Just to name of few of them; communication issues (Godwin is difficult to understand at times, the masons and carpenters do not speak English, and some of the members of GCS do not speak Godwin's language), driving from point a to point b is always a journey (whether because the several potholes in the road or because the driver decides to pick up several more passengers), travelers sickness (I think you get my drift), another volunteers' money was taken, a teacher was let go, and the 'sense of urgency' never really exists...

Despite these annoyances there have been several good points; I have learned the area much better (I actually drove form Ho to Kpetoe -with people I know which is about a half hour), a father whose kids are attending the school called me his friend and gave me a banner, a contract has been reached for the start of a 3 room structure, another volunteer from the U.S. is at the school teaching (Kathleen), I have learned more words in Ewe, I have met more locals and I feel as if more cooperation has been happening, in this area for this project specifically.

All of these things weigh heavy in my thoughts. Throughout all of it, I have learned patience and goodwill is invaluable.

The goal

Yet another hurdle has been jumped...last week's fundraiser was a huge success as the bake sale brought in around 900 dollars. Many people from the community deserve the thanks. Several generous people gave baked goods, while others gave donations of money. Thankfully the goal has been surpassed and I'm quite confident that the school will be improved and expanded very shortly. As I spoke to Godwin recently I learned that the roster of students has grown to nearly 200. The need is great for these kids and this amount of funds should make a large difference in their well being. I hope to utilize all the funds on the School, and if anything remains after providing the necessities the Orphanage can be given attention. {For the sake of accountability I will be making a list of expenditures as I had for the spring trip -to those of you who had helped pay for some of my plane ticket.}

I will be leaving for Ghana November 5th, and staying for another month. I have received word that a couple volunteers are already there, which makes the project outlook easier. I will be doing a lot of the assessment of needs while I'm there in the first few days and record it in a journal as well as updates via the web. Although many places in Africa are of the third world and lack in technology, they do have access to internet in the cities where technology has thrived. If you would like to receive a letter through email while I am there, please send me your email address. As stated in the previous post there are some basics that need to be taken care of for the school; books, desks, plaster, another building, bathrooms, teacher training/salaries might also be a need.

I sincerely appreciate everyone's belief in this project, the contributions, and advice. I was able to wire him some funds to cover the hospital bill and some extra for teacher salaries (the money did not come from the donated funds for the school project). I found out that they received it nearly two weeks ago...

I have purchased a plane ticket today and will be returning to Ghana November 5th (flexible). There are a few more things I must take care of before heading out. Anti-malarial will be the most expensive thing to do before I go. Luckily, I will not need to get vaccinations again but the malaria medicine is an unfortunate must.

The recalculated goal will hopefully be reached by way of donations before my intended date of departure. One of the fundraisers coming up is a bake sale at the Community Center in Adams, Wisconsin October 22nd. I appreciate all the support thus far and now I intend to carefully invest the money donated into the appropriate project as I stay in Ghana again during November.

As a contributing team, we are 3/5ths of the way to the goal. I will be doing whatever I can to attain the goal before I go and I am confident that it will be reached. I wanted to post more news; I was able to speak to Godwin about 2 weeks ago and found out a lot of details (I also received emails which gave most details). The group from Ireland that I was able to meet and team up with was able to lay down a solid start. The pictures are posted below of what has been accomplished thus far... the team was able to put in 5 classrooms!
I asked Godwin what was left to do and he listed off quite a few things. To sum it up they need a few more classrooms, plaster on the entire structure, bathrooms, electric work, desks, books, and many other items including another compound for the kids/him (an orphanage). This is great news; the school building is underway.

However, I recently heard from another friend of his, via email, that explained he was ill, and has been staying in a hospital under his friends' care. The belief is that he has a stomach ulcer and typhoid, hopefully he gets well soon.

In the meantime I am starting to plan a trip back to Ghana, quite possibly towards the end of October. As of now I have rethought a goal for an amount to bring over and fund the project. We are currently just above 50% of the goal of money raised, and I dont think anyone else was planning on going on the trip with me. Despite that, I am optimistic since the project has already begun.

I am looking forward to the challenge but with the understanding that I am not alone.

An account and the start of raising funds

The summer is nearing an end and I still have a lot of work to do. Fortunately I have been able to speak at 2 more churches and a couple more clubs.

Good news came about 12 days ago as Bethany Lutheran Church (of New Lisbon, WI.) decided to hold onto any of the money raised for the project. This non profit account was the first large hurdle to clear and it gives much needed support. I am now in a position to focus on raising funds solely for the school project.

While trying to speak at more places and set up more meetings I have realized I cannot do this on my own. I need help doing this. If you are able to give money please send it to:

618 W. River ST.
New Lisbon, WI.
53950

Make sure to designate checks payable to Bethany Lutheran AND on the memo line write Ghana Project, or School Project. I believe all gifts of money are tax deductable and receipts would be given at the end of the year.

If you know someone else that could help but they would want to hear about the project from me, or you are a part of an organization that may be able to fundraise please contact through email at jake_snake12@hotmail.com or godwinamwayschool@gmail.com. I am completely open to speaking anywhere or meeting with anyone.

Thank you for any support -most recently the support from the people I work with and work for who graciously donated more than 1300 dollars total in one day.

Mid Summer

So the craziness of another summer has set in, despite this I have been keeping in touch with my friends overseas. I have been keeping very busy at work, the days are beginning to feel more and more like minutes passing by.

A couple of great things have happened in regards to the project... I have been able to meet more people through my job, whom have become instrumentally supportive. Additionally, ideas for fundraisers have come out in the open and will be occurring before the end of the summer. As far as the funds are concerned; although I am not deliberately seeking out funds for the project at the moment, money has still come in. A few supporters have maintained reoccurring financial support and even the largest single amount has been received. This is good news but demonstrates the importance of a timely move for an account.

In the last couple weeks I have had the opportunity to speak at a couple places to present the situation. Nearly 2 weeks ago I was able to speak at a church council meeting, and even more recently I spoke at a Lions Club meeting. I am trying to schedule these opportunities in order to speed this project up. The suggestions, financial support, and kind words have all been encouraging.

A friend of mine (Rachel) had the opportunity to travel to Ghana a few weeks back. Knowing this, I was able to send a suitcase to the Orphanage, as well as my friends at the Organization in Ghana. She is currently there trying to help with our school project since I gave her a list of items that would hopefully get figured out. Not long ago she sent some pictures to confirm her arrival and the delivery of the suitcase, which was great to see -thank you Rachel! I sent a photo album which is seen in the picture to the right...

Starting Summer

During the start of the summer it has become a bit more difficult to raise funds for several reasons. First, I needed to move from where I had been living, which took a lot of reorganizing and time since it was very tedious.

Second, I have been at a crossroads trying to find a nonprofit organization that would hold onto the charity-money. I have tried a few different options, but found that they are only dead ends. I was able to make some progress in that I have more contacts that understand what we are hoping to do. I wasn't able to obtain an account with the church I had been trying to, but this is not the end of fundraising, only a temporary hold up. I have several other options which I will be exploring. This includes non-religous groups that might hold onto, or team up with me in order to tax shelter the money received. Since I have become aware that this will not be easy I have become frustrated at times with the some of the beaurocratic procedures, that seemingly have a sole purpose to make this more difficult.

Finally, I have had to find another place to work. This has not been easy either, but I will be continuing to work where I have been for the last 6 years, during this summer. I will be anxiously waiting to return to Ghana while I raise money and hopefully bump into the "right" person, or people while at work. In the meantime, I have been able to speak with Godwin, as well as the other volunteer staffers overseas. Most recently I learned that Godwin is hoping to purchase more land in addition to the 6 acres where the future project site is located. It has always been great to hear from him as it keeps the direct connection of what can come out of this hopeful project.

In addition to the project I have been involved with the volunteer organzation I discovered while I was in Ghana (called GCS http://www.gcs-np.org/sites/node). Several prospective volunteers have inquired further into different programs that we are offering and how the experience was for me while I was there. I have become more invloved since taking on the role of a staff member of the organization, and I continue to hear from all of them, in addition to Godwin.

For questions or further details regarding the project please email godwinamway@gmail.com. I am open to any suggestions that would also aid this project. Thank you all for your continued support.

The New Site

In the last couple weeks i have been able to make some progress with the school project. I have received the site plan from Ghana (it is posted below).

It is on a 5 acre plot, with the remaining 5 acres to be bought by Godwin. The school drawing is not definite yet, but has been drawn up. Along with the site plan and that drawing there is a estimate sheet I was able to obtain. I went to Menards to have a contractor draw it up. Although the estimate only shows what it would cost if it were built here in the U.S., it gives a good idea as to what we should look for in a rough price figure. Often times the foreign businesspeople try to make a larger profit off of others (especially foreigners), which is why this estimate is helpful to a degree.

I would also like to thank those of you who have already contributed. Some of you have given a lot and it has been incredible. The support is always encouraging! I believe that soon enough a school will be built. But given all the circumstances it's important to be patient and look at the long term goal with persistence. I am also trying to get the right information on getting a nonprofit status or partnering with an already existent organization but it all takes time. I will try to keep everyone posted...

The Oprhanage and Godwin

The building is made of concrete as are all the other buildings in Ghana, due to the termites and price of wood. The Orphanage is able to care for about 10 kids. At the moment there are 8 orphans staying there. Delali is Godwin’s sister who takes care of cooking and cleaning. More or less she is the house mom. Although she takes care of the things at the orphanage, it just isn’t enough for some of the kids. Maybe the kids need a more personal role model or maybe she isn’t educated enough to take care of the physical ailments of the kids. Nonetheless she is a hard worker and shares the burden to care for the poor orphans.

Godwin (Galley is the last name) started the school in 2004 with only 15 students and 2 teachers. His vision he told me;

"to establish free education for the needy street children and orphans"

.
As a cultural norm, Godwin (pictured below, on the right) has a close family. Sadly his mother passed away last year (2008) which “pains” him. However his father, John, still lives in Kpetoe and is active in supporting Godwin. He has 2 sisters, and other half siblings. 1 of his sisters lives in Gabon and is able to aid him when necessary. As noted above Delali is his other sister who contributes her daily life to the orphanage. She has 2 daughters (Innocent and Seraphine) that live at the orphanage as well. The 2 girls are able to go to a regular school and therefore are able to speak English well.

Common occurrences in Ghana that we do not see in the U.S. include an extreme recklessness when driving (which yields a large amount of deaths), deaths from simple illnesses (treatable diseases), and deaths from snake bites. Altogether this makes it more common to be orphaned. Maybe they eat 2 meals in a day, some days maybe not. Hopefully this gives a little more perspective into the routines and lifestyle over there.

I would like to share only 2 snippets of the kid’s lives on the blog (I asked if I could use this information) …

Delight Dzreke

This is Delight; she is 10 years old now. No one knows who her father is. When she was 2 years old her mother was about to deliver another sibling. At the young age of 2, her mother died due to pregnancy complications along with the newborn. She only has some distant relatives like her grandma whom she stayed with until she was 6. Because she needed more support the orphanage took her in.

She is now 10 years old and only in grade 1. She hadn’t been in school before, but now she has a chance to learn. Delight likes to smile (if you look at her).

Komla Gbotso (Kente weaving)

This is Komla, he is 11 years old. While driving at night from Togo to the city (Ho) a vehicle struck the vehicle his father was traveling in. He became fatherless at the age of 3. Shortly afterwards the mother, unable to support his 2 sisters and 2 brothers, fled. It is believed she sought out work in the area of Lagos, Nigeria. However no one has known of her whereabouts for the last 5-6 years.

He has been in the orphanage for 2 years since his distant relatives are unable to provide the necessities anymore. Yet they are still caring for some of his siblings. At 11 years old he is in grade 4. Komla is extremely good at math given his situation.

The School

Below: About 90 of the students and a few teachers.

Created in 2004, the school began small in size, by Godwin in the village of Kpetoe. As noted on the main page, the school presently contains a roster of about 140 students. These students cannot afford a regular education therefore they have to resort to a free school. Many reasons lead to their enrollment; being orphaned (about half that attend are orphans), lack of funds for school, and not having anywhere else to go or anything else to do while their caretakers farm or earn money. These kids are picked up in the van by Godwin (shown in the back of the photo) around 7 in the morning and taken to "school".

The school is run by about 6 teachers which have a high turnover rate. Madam Francisca, located in the top left corner, has taught at the school since it opened. Other than her, 3 teachers have been there for about a month, and the other 2 for about 1 year. Godwin and the others that help administrate (Mr. Scott and the Secretary) are able to pay a very minimal wage of about 40 cedis a month. This converts to roughly 28 U.S. Dollars. Recently (Spring of 2009) they have been seeking a raise. Although this may seem problematic, the teachers have heart, but need more motivation and structure. They are good people aiding the disadvantaged.

Grades K-6 are taught here, and the largest class is the Kindergarten class of approximately 55 kids. Subjects taught in school include English, Math, RME (Religion, Morals and Ethics), Science, ICT (Computer Technology), CE (Citizenship Education), French, and Ewe (the local language).

The "school" is made up of 3 huts and a mango tree. This is hardly something that is conducive to a good learning experience as many distractions inhibit the learning experience. Since it is located out in the country (they call it the bush), they have to constantly clear the grass in area by way of a cutlass on Fridays. This clearing yields the dirt floor you see in the pictures above and below.

The reason why they do this is mainly to discourage snakes from disturbing them. Additional obvious problems are; having to fetch water daily on the way to school, hiding from the rain (which cancels school), playing in the dirt makes their uniforms dirty, and the heat.

Finally, since the government does not aid this institution they have very few resources. Just one example of this is the 1 Math book class 5 has to learn from. Therefore they lack books and even workbooks to write in. The last and possibly most important form of aid that they do not receive are meals. They struggle to eat something before or during school. The kids arrive around 7:00 and return to their homes around 3:00. Concentration becomes more difficult since they rarely eat 3 meals a day, or even a lunch.
